Did anyone else watch this last night? I was never a fan of Cream or that style of music, much prefer a good pop song, Beatles for example, but I did enjoy this look into the life of Ginger Baker, he's been there and back, lived life to the full and is still going strong!

Met him a few times in the early 70's at a Pub called 'Ye Olde Blue Boar' near Newbury on the Berkshire Downs, think there was a Music Industry
'Big noise' living nearby as there were a few groups showing up there on a regular basis. looking back you wouldn't have put money on him making 30 in those days! To be fair he was a nice guy.
Watched some of it, and while I loved Cream and Ginger's drumming he does have a nasty "edge" about him (which is maybe why his drumming was so good).

He made no attempt to come across as a "nice bloke" in the interview, for example telling the interviewer at one point "I have already told you that your *** ***).

I understand he and Jack Bruce had a strange love / hate relationship and had a few stand up fights during their time together.

In fact if it were not for his drumming skills and rock career you can imagine Ginger may have finished up in prison as I think he finds it hard fit into "society".
While Cream do have a reputation for rock / heavy metal (sort of) they did in fact make quite a few what you may call "pop songs".

"Dance the night away" is one for example, from Disraeli Gears.

Also the moving song "We're going wrong" also from Disraeli Gears.

Written by Jack Bruce after a huge row with his wife.

Stunning power drumming from Ginger behind the vocal.

This song would have fitted nicely on the Beatles White Album for example.

I interviewed GB for Drummer Magazine a few years ago.

It was by radio telephone - he was living on his ranch in the South African bush.

I can honestly say he confirmed his reputation as the most belligerent man on the planet!

I saw him play live in Montreal last year, and it is clear that he is in great pain with arthritis, but is still driven to play drums as well as he can, which is extremely well indeed.

Horrible man - wonderful musician.
Please tell me that this was on a BBC channel so that I could watch it on BBC iplayer.
I liked the documentary and the way he speaks his mind regardless of who he upsets, never thought he would live to a ripe old age and definately an ambassador for Range Rover !
He didn't have a good word to say about many other drummers, did he? They were all ***'s, lol.
Tony - it's here -

Hmmmmm... try again with a short URL -

Doesn't work, LIK. But thanks anyway.
Crossed posts there, LIK. Many thanks.
You're welcome - I'm glad I saw this thread as I missed the programme as well, it's now bookmarked for future watching :-)

PS I reported the first link's failure to the Ed team, can't see what I did wrong...

Doubt if it's your fault, LIK. Most likely something to do with the link.
I loved Cream, wish I had known GB was on. But the last link works so I shall watch it. Thank you sp48 for bringing it to my attention.
Odd though, it should have worked. I've posted iPlayer links before with no trouble...
What channel was it on? I can't seem to find it anywhere.
Last night - BBC1 10:35 "Imagine...Beware of Mr Baker"

The link @ 11:48 ^^^^ should work ok...
Thanks a lot, L-i-K. Will give it a go.
Remember going to see him in his post Cream band Airforce at Stoke on Trent in the early 70s. Powerful drummer but he had a few choice words for his fellow band mates when it took a couple of false starts to get a number going.
