@Thenry - well, thats whats so good about our history and culture - so much to choose from, so little time :)

We are all different, and you cannot please all of the people all of the time. Given how long in the tooth John Cleese is nowadays, and given that both Basil Fawlty and Alan Partridge are at least somewhat reliant on verbal humour, I think Mr. Bean was probably the best choice :)
We should have had trotter there.
Now he of all people would have been more suited (but maybe not booted)
Trotter?
It's a little known fact but the Morecambe and wise sketch was itself a recreation of one they did back in the 60's.
He's bloody ugly isn't he?
Rowan Atkinson made me laugh a bit tonight even though I have gone off Mr Bean since the first few sketches he did. But I don't think the comedy sketch was suitable while the great "Chariots of Fire" music was being played, the two didn't mix and it spoilt the music for me.
Well I was in a room full of people and they all cracked up at Rowan Atkinson. Personally I loved him in Blackadder but not in Mr Bean. Oh and in real life he's quite handsome.
lazygun - I always thought Mr Bean was based on the Marcel Marceau style of French mime and would never, therefore, be representative of British humour ?
Never liked Rowan Atkinson, but tonight we all fell about laughing. It was just great.
@ thenry - well mr bean was mime / visual humour. Rowan Atkinson may well have been inspired by Marceau, but the character Atkinson created, Mr.Bean, was a product of british culture.

To be truthful, I am not a huge fan of Mr. Bean, but I thought that the whole Chariots of Fire sequence was an absolute hoot :)
