I've been invited to a party on the theme 'The Oscars' - either as a well-known film star or just dressed to impress. I don't want to spend a fortune on a fancy dress outfit I'll only wear once - Does anyone have any ideas about who I could go dressed as (I'm a woman) or where I can get a 'Oscars'-style dress at a reasonable price?

TK Maxx are pretty good for fairly cheap glitzy dresses.  You won't be getting a well known designer mind, but for a fancy dress party I don't suppose it matters.

As for who you could go as, you're best just look at your hair and skin colour and see who you most resemble.  Obviously make up and wigs can help a lot.

Little accessories can also help.  Think about the classic Breakfast at Tiffany's poster.  Elbow length gloves, a cigarette holder and some "Claire's Accessories" d'iamonds' can accesorise a plain black dress into that look.  Maybe try to adapt what you already have! Either way - have fun!!! :-)
you could cover yourself in gold foil and go as 'an oscar'.  :-)
You could go as Cher, that way you'll only need the underwear, stockings and big hair ;-)

Thanks for all the great ideas - will check out TK Maxx at the weekend. By the way GucciGal - how did you know I go out on the town in just my underwear (do I know you? My reputation must precede me - lol!)
This site is brilliant.  The shop is in London and they make dresses exactly like the one's that the stars wear to the Oscars.  www.bernshaw.com
