Antichrist

Haven't seen the film (in fact none of Lars von Trier's work) and now the DVD is out. The reviews from both the hacks and cinemagoers are either very good or very bad with very few in the middle

So does anyone here have an opinion about the film? Worth seeing? Pretentious and arty-farty? Just plain dull?

Pretentious and VERY arty-farty, tedious in the extreme, tied up in symbolism and about 100% up its own ar$e. Life is way too short and you will not get the time back.

And yes, there are close up sex scenes and violent body mutilation; bizarrely these were the highlights.
Had it on a screener a while back, stated to watch it but fell asleep, never a good sign. Tried again but it's too heavy going with no real story, and excessive violence and torture porn for no reason whatsoever. Like whickerman said, pretentious, arty farty and definitely up it's own glitter.

Try it, you may feel differently, let us know if you do. Always good to get someone elses opinion.

So that's 2 against 0 for, so far.

Using that link, Daily-Editor, it just sits there saying "Waiting for video" for several minutes (at which point I give up).

Perhaps I should have added that I have read in one review that people are going to love/hate it in much the same way as Eraserhead - and that is one of my favourite films.

I did buy the DVD (that was inevitable, to be honest) and have just watched it.

At the moment (5 mins after viewing) I feel ambivalent; just because a film isn't about 3D smurfs in space, pre-pubescent vampires or giant robots doesn't per se make it pretentious or tedious (just as using the term "per se" in a message board posting is not necessarily either of those two things).

I'll have to sleep on it.

I give it 6/10 - this shows how that compares to my other films on DVD http://www.imdb.com/mymovies/list?l=16108977

Antichrist requires concentration for the whole duration of the film but that's not a bad thing. However it is too one-track about grief exhibited in a way that doesn't remotely correspond to what I have personally experienced or seen on film, and whilst that seems ok to start with, it just drags on for far too long; however that emotion seems to be the sole purpose of the film (more or less confirmed if you watch the extras on the DVD).

The mutilation violence did look quite realistic and so did make me wince slightly (probably a 2nd viewing would make it seem quite tame - that has usually happened with other films).

So, overall, a bit too monotonous and unremittingly sombre yet not engagingly deep for what it purports to be; thus I'm unlikely to watch it again soon.
Watch "The Road Home" a beautiful film.

Do you mean the Chinese film http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0235060/ ? I'm not quite as much into drama (except Shakespeare) as other genres so it's simply not caught my imagination as a film that I would go out of my way to see.
It's a good film, try "Brotherhood (Tae Guk Gi)" a war film or "Assembly" then "Welcome To Dongmokgol" is a goodun too.

Thanks for the recommendations - I'll take note of them.
