What's the film?

Does anyone know the title of this film? It's a black and white film - it may have been in a foreign language, although I can't really remember (possibly French or Spanish). It was set in this small poor town, and three of the characters accepted the offer of a dangerous job, to earn money to get out of the town. The job was driving trucks full of explosive material. I seem to remember it ended with two of the guys being blown up their trucks, with the final guy succeeding and getting all the money. He drives back to the town, celebrating and ends up accidentally driving his truck of the edge of a cliff.

It all sounds a bit bizarre, I know, but I watched it on TV ages ago and it has stuck with me, although I've never seen it again.

Any ideas at all?!

Sounds like the old french film, wages of fear.

Not actually seen it for yonks, but it certainly has the main element you describe.

That film was remade in the 70s as Sorcerer.
