Brokeback Mountain film ending query...

Doh! I get the feeling this is supposed to be obvious but I am missing something. At the end of Brokeback Mountain when Jack's wife is telling Ennis how he died and she is describing an accident is this how he really died or is it a cover up story? As the scene that plays as if in Ennis' mind is that he is attacked by some men and brutally killled, is this what the director was trying to tell us really happened? I have asked around and some people think the first situation others the second one, I have seen it twice and I'm still none the wiser!

Your thoughts please...

I was also a bit confused by the ending, but I took it that he was brutally murdered by the men - which was the same thing that had happened years before to a gay guy. Still a fantastic film though

I'm pretty certain he was killed brutally. It's in a collection of short stories by Annie Proulx, so you could read it for yourself, i suppose. (she also wrote The Shipping News- interesting but irrelevant fact there for ya) xx

I always took it to be the beating.... I thought that he was brutally beaten to death because they found out he was gay but his wife isn't about to go speading that around and made up the accident story. Thats why she looks so odd when she is talking to him.

Yeah I agree with Orange Gnome, she made up the story to cover the fact that he was killed for being gay, but the viewer is shown what really happened.

Also I think Ennis knows what happened as well, I took it that he saw through her story

I knew it! however everyone I've watched it with - incidentally all women have said that the accident she describes must be the way he died and that the way I thought was wrong. I'll take this as proof that I was right!
