If you like tense thrillers with inconclusive endings that make you think.....try "No Country For Old Men" (best serial killer of any recent movie).

If you like unusual musicals with scenes of people having their throats slit...."Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street" (Johnny Depp is brilliant)

If you like apocalyptic futuristic thrillers that make you think and have some great action sequences....try "Children of Men"

If you like something completely action-packed and violent, but full of human interest and a bit of history (and you don't mind reading subtitles)....try "Apocolypto" - one of the best chase movies ever made

If you like epic (2 and a half hour) sagas about the fight between businessmen and religious zealots in early 20th century America starring Daniel Day Lewis as a compelling monster and ending more shockingly and bizarrely than any recent movie....try "There Will Be Blood"

I have watched all these in the last couple of months and I have found all of them entertaining and absorbing. I liked "I Am Legend" too, with a few reservations.

Hope this helps.

I finally got around to watching ' Cloverfield at the weekend' and despite reservations I had thinking it might just another Blair Witch, I ended up really enjoying it. It's got a few good 'aaaarrrghhh, I wasn't expecting that!' moments.

'Cloverfield at the weekend' is of course it's full title and not just a typo on my part - honest.

Best to watch the unobvious, quieter ones, I reckon. Films that don't get as much mention as others but build a certain respect, away from tacky hype etc. Like 'Funny Games' with Naomi Watts or 'In Bruges' with Colin Farrell. I could fill this space with a hundred but those are two I've watched recentl;y that I've enjoyed. For the big blockbusters though 'Cloverfield' is first rate.
