The Dark Knight - 12A Or 15
I saw The Dark Knight last week, and whilst I thought that it was a great, great movie, I thought it was way too violent to be certified as a 12A. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/75402 92.stm There are a couple of scenes (the disappearing pencil and The Joker's knife speech) which seemed especially gruesome. Am I being oversensitive? Should it have been a 15?

I think I'm the only one that didn't like this film. Thought the Joker was brilliant but the film was boring to me. Went on forever! Batman's voice also irritated me too.
I think it was a bit too violent for a 12A. I thought the bit with the mobile phone was a bit gross too.

I was very disappointed when I found out that it was going to be a 12A, but thankfully I was pleasantly surprised, so, yes, I would agree with you, it probably should've been a 15 really. But I imagine, it was just borderline so it could be view by a wider audience and make more money.

Should be a 15, by 9 year old nephew wanted to see it, and because i had taken him to a 12a before he thought he could go, i went to see it on the day of release and had to disappoint him, there is no way i would let him watch that. - i got freaked out by the joker!! - excellent film though. Loved it!!!

12 year olds are very grown up now, and how long do we protect them from these comic book character for.
I took several 12yr olds inc my son and afterwards he said "That was a cool magic trick with the pencil"
I hated batmans change of voice, it was like Jim Carey in Me, Myself and Irene. And that Maggie I kept expecting her to bend over the desk for a good spanking, i've only ever seen her in 'The Secretary' before.
I kept drifting off and it didn't keep my attention 100%, I considered it good but not great.

Tough one that, I think your opinion changes depending on the age of the child you are taking. I took my 13 an 10 year old, and the youngest didn't like the bits when the Joker put the knife to peoples mouths and told his story - but then it never showed you anything, just implied. Also, the pencil in the eye was so quick most people I hear just went 'Uh?'. I think the rating is right. You really should go on the bbfc web site and check out what can be in a film and what's aloud for each rating - it's very interesting. I do it all the time before I see a 12A now with my kids.

Question Author
I'd forgotten about the voice change.
I laughed out loud the first time he spoke as Batman. It just seemed...funny.
I've forgotten the mobile phone scene. Perhaps my memory but the disappearing pencil will stay with me for quite some time.

Went to see it last night and must admit I would sway more towards it being 15.
I know there is violence in cartoons and such not not portrayed in such a dark/disturbed light as this.
The voice was wierd!!
Great film though.

Yes, whilst I myself am no prude, I think this should have been a 15 certificate without question. There were some very violent bits in it, and in the light of the recent knife crimes it could be very influencial to young children.
