Definately sounds like 'Medium'. Ladies name is Alison Dubois (plyed by Patricia Arquette). Based on a real Psycic called Alison Dubois. Excellent tv series now about to go into its 4th season.

co-incidentally ITV's "afterlife" also fits the above brief synopsis, and has a main character called Alison.
