vague wilderness film

this is very vague but does anybody know the title of a film from the 60's or 70's where the end of the film a dog is scratching at the ice for his owner who has fallen through.
That's all but the person could have been kirk douglas or burt lancaster

i remember a film with charlton heston as a gold rush prospector in the yukon called *call of the wild* it also featured a dog looking through the ice at charlton heston who had died . what a great film
