Surely it is a generation matter,
How many of the younger generations have even seen either Citizen Kain or Vertigo?
So one would assume that the top films would constantly change in popularity according to the ages of those who join in these polls.
Vertigo is certainly one of them. I also like Hitchcocks 'The Birds', (and loads of his other movies), also Frank Capra's 'It's a wonderful life', and the original 'Star Wars' movies. However, if I had to pick my all time fave it would be Sergio Leone's 'For a few dollars more'.
The Shawshank Redemption definitely. Closely followed by The Outlaw Josie Wales.
I have numerous films that I think could be contenders: Shawshank Redemption, Withnail And I, One Flew over..., Clockwork Orange, ET, Galaxy Quest, Bladerunner, Annie Hall, The Fifth Element...
Casablanca.
Special mention: Carry On Up the Khyber
AOG, these polls are of film critics. They are familiar with great films of the past. For quite a while, Battleship Potemkin was near the top! Citizen Kane is the equivalent of a set text for film buffs and has been top or near top for many years. I think it overrated as entertainment, but it has always scored highly for its cinematic construction, the novel use of odd camera angles and so on. Battleship Potemkin is equally dull, but interesting to students of film history, for similar reasons.
Vertigo is not even its director's best film but, unaccountably, has begun to appear in the list. Perhaps it's now studied in film schools!
