Recommend a film

Not being a cinema goer or much of a TV watcher – I have taken to watching DVD films purchased from my local trade in store. I would estimate that they have on display around 5,000 titles – and there-in lies my problem, which ones to watch. Despite the obvious positive reviews on the DVD packaging – many are dire.

So I am inviting all Aber’s to recommend films – not necessarily block busters, but films that you very much enjoyed and would recommend to others (all suggestions welcome). To start the ball rolling, I offer a selection based on the DVDs I have obtained from my local trade in store (in no particular order) – that I consider worth a watch, with my review in less than 10 words.


The Negotiator – Good hostage story

Daylight Robbery – British bank robbery

The Parole Officer – Alan Partridge starred in and wrote this caper

The Hard World - Good Aussie robbery/heist gone wrong

Team America, World Police – Humorous, Thunderbirds for adults

Steal – Like it says on the tin, a slick thriller

The Transporter 1, 2 and 3 – Jason Statham at his best

Do they have any tv series available maybe as a boxed set or some such?
There are a lot of tv classics available or what about some of the old movie classics, The Big Sleep, Casablanca, or The Lady Eve?
I love some of the old Powell and Pressburger films, I know where I'm Going, A Canterbury Tale, Battle of the River Plate etc. I see you have three films with Jason Statham, can I suggest the recent version of The Italian Job which he was in. As long as you don't compare it with the original I think it stands quite well on it's own as an entertaining piece of nonsense.
There are so many good films out there no wonder you're having a hard time trying to choose .

OK given what you like so far if you've not seen them you might like some of
Quentin Tarantino's films like Reservoir dogs (if you don't mind it a bit violent), Inglorious Bastards and Jackie Brown - possibly pulp fiction

When I'm looking for a good film, I look at the Lovefilm website. Not to order, but to check what people are recommending, what's new, etc. Easy as you can select genre, etc.

Not really Joe -'coyote ugly' is a derogatory term used to describe a woman you have slept with who is so ugly you'd chew your own arm off to get away from in the morning. You don't need to have seen the film as the phrase existed long before it and it is the sort of thing you could well come out with.
