brought a lump to my throat ... again

just watched ET on the telly.

the departure at the ending has moved me, again. it is one of only two movie sequences that has had this effect on me.

part of it is primarily the superb music score by john williams.

as a movie buff - i think soundtracks are a vital part of any film, and i have my favourites (1) james horner (2) jerry goldsmith (3) john williams (4) maurice jarre. and so on
there are, of course many more superb composers.

anybody else have favourite movie composers?

Danny Elfman.
Speaking of bringing a lump to your throat, Bobby Simone's death in NYPD Blue, has me whimpering! Absolutely brilliant, as good as any feature film!
I'm gonna have to ask it :-/

So what's the other one excel?
Question Author
sipowicz. yes, danny elfman .. the preferred compoder for tim burton and other 'dark' directors.

missnemesis. you (and everyone else) will think i'm silly - but i don't care.

i'm a trek fan, so the other occasion is the death and subsequent funeral of spock at the end of one of the films (cringe)
As well as most of those already mentioned, I'd give a shout out to:

Basil Poledouris (particularly Conan and Starship Troopers)
Georges Delerue (A Summer Story in particular)

If you like filmic music, there's a lot of great stuff from production companies like the aforementioned X Ray Dog as well as Two Steps From Hell, Immediate Music, Audiomachine, and Liquid Cinema (to name a few). For your consideration, here's "Voyages" from the "Flowers of War" trailer:

Danny Elfman has to be my absolute favourite. It was only last year that I found out about James Horner which is amazing really since Braveheart has one of my all time favourite soundtracks. Another one is Craig Armstrong. His music is just so lovely and warm, his Glasgow Love Theme from Love Actually being my favourite :-)

For me, music can either make or break a film. The thing that connects all of my favourite films is great music, whether it has been composed specifically or just chosen because of its suitability for the movie.
Note to self - look up 'favourite' in the thesaurus!! :-)
