Titanic 3D

I am going to watch this tonight. Was not going to until I read the James Cameron interview in the Culture section - The Sunday Times 2 weeks ago. To roughly paraphrase Cameron was talking about what a perfectionist he is, that 2 Titanic historians were employed to ensure all the details were as they would have been. He would shout down at people from his crane, 'I didn't want it like that..' The film went over budget and time in his pursuit of perfection. And the Titanic was built 90% to scale!

So now it is out in 3D and he was asked whether like George Lucas (Star Wars) he would change any of the scenes? He said, no, that the movie's love story is more prominent etc, then he said something along the lines of.....

He had got this snotty email from Neil Dygrasse Tyson, the NASA astronomer who said that since Cameron was such a perfectionist he was surprised that the part where Rose is lying on the driftwood in the Ocean looking at the sky, that is the wrong constellation for April 15, 1912.

So Cameron sent him an email saying...'You son of a b**ch, send me the correct star system at that point'.

So now the 3D version has the correct star constellation for 15th April, 1912 as Rose would have seen it and that is the only reason I am going to watch this whole movie again.

I shall let Seadragon know later whether it was worth it.

i'd welcome your verdict on the movie.
i saw it originally, and it was super - i've been wondering if it would be worth seeing it again in 3d. i am going to see battleship tomorrow.
i await your verdict

Welcome to my humble....orange abode Excelsior and Eyesh!

(I'm sorry, I love this hidden away section of Answerbank (or to me it is!) I enjoy having fun here.)

Today I should rename it the 'Atlantic Bank' as I will watch my thread sink into the depths of this technological ocean.....

Thank you for the compliment Excelsior, my verdict on any film is not worth more than 'tuppence'. Take my sister, if I rave about a movie she knows not to watch it and if I don't like a movie, she will put it on her rental list.

Have recommended 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' to her, that is a good one.

Titanic! .....Honestly...It was hard watching, really hard. I have seen it once before and at 3hrs 15mins, the time went swiftly but some scenes drag.....because I know what happens I was sitting thinking, 'oh my God this scene has to come yet and that one' and they drag, I think half an hour more could have been cut.

Saying that if you are a fan, you will love it. The 3D is actually very good, I think Cameron does it the best. I noticed it more in the first half than the second and Rose sounded like 'Dorothy' (Wiz of Oz) at times, esp around the beginning.

The Milky Way was well worth the wait.... I don't know what the constellation in front was though. I am glad I watched it but won't sit through the full version again.

Surprisingly I didn't cry this time, probably because of the couple sitting next to me who kept snogging during every intimate scene and I am sure they were snogging at the end when Jack goes down.

A question...I don't get why Rose does not leave the diamond to the explorers? I know it's romantic to send it to the bottom and the rest but that one thing bugs me and I know it's a movie but every time I think Titanic, I think why didn't she give it to the explorers...there equipment is expensive? Their whole search was for that Diamond and who would it benefit by being at the bottom of the Ocean anyway?

Excelsior enjoy Battleship tonight.

And I forgot it was orange Wednesday...the cinema was packed! Never again.
thought the original was way overhyped..bit boring and predictable...want to know how it ends ?
He employed 2 historians but isn't the portrayal of the lower classes being kept below decks now believed to be false?

They had roughly the same loss of life percentage as the crew.

Mattk - You want to look up this site...www.anesi.com/titanic.htm (that's what it says in the Google bar) It shows the Titanic Casualty Figures in particular of interest is that '3rd class women were 41% more likely to survive than 1st class men.'

Basically the men were worst of whether 1st or 3rd class and they make the greatest figures for loss of life.

What I found interesting again is how the 3rd class were treated and how the 1st rich struggled as well. I noticed it more on this viewing Rose's mother's desperation to have her daughter wedded to money as they were sinking (no pun intended) and yet she was the cruellest at maintaining the social division.

Also Billy Zane's character...forgotten his name, he intended to wed Rose thinking of inheriting her money (when she didn't have any) and the bequeath of the Diamond to her showed his overall greed for her inheritance....which then he receives marrying someone else.

Viewed in that light, the ostentatious extravagance of the 1st classes left me as sickened as the poor treatment of those in the 3rd classes.
thank you seadragon for your complements, and for reporting back as requested.
i shall go over the weekend to see it. . .in the meantime, i went to see battleship after work this afternoon. just pure escapism - but that's what i like. one for the boys you might say

Thanks Excelsior.

Murray...I hope you were not going to say that the ship sinks!!.....For me, the real ending really was when Rose looks up at the Statue of Liberty.

Maybe the Romanticism was alittle too much for me as well, and I much preferred to look at the surrounding issues raised such as classes.

And besides even though the Titanic sank, it's strange how we 100 years later have re-discovered it...mainly through it's 80's discovery in the Atlantic and through Cameron's efforts......the Titanic re-emerges....
I couldnt go this week to watch the Titanic in 3D but I am hoping to do so this week. Thanks for the feedback Seadragon.
