Commercial Van Query

We live down a cul-de-sac which is horse shoe shaped & all but 1 house is on street parking. The house that has a drive is on the right hand side of the curve (hope that makes sense!). We moved in 2 months ago & we have a corsa as our family car & my partner has a VW caddy van which has a company name & numbers on. Only twice in 2 months has the street ever been full & we've had 2 park around the corner.

On friday the owner of the house with the drive rang my boyfriends work & complained that we take up to much room! 2 other properties have 2 vehicles so i didn't know why we'd been singled out. I went round 2 discuss her issue & she told me that as his van had the company info on it was illegal 2 park over night on a public street. I'm not sure this is correct, as obviously my boyfriends work knows where we live & that its on street parking. Its where we live, so where else is he meant to park???

As she has a drive non of her cars are ever at risk of not having a space. We have never blocked he street so the road is to tight to drive down. It was my understanding that aslong as a vehicle is taxed and insured it is legal to park on a public road? Any clarification would be fab. Thanks!

can't say that i've ever heard that it's illegal for a company van to be parked on the street. Does this woman have a life? or is she just bored and in need of causing an unecessary dispute with neighbours??

So long as your partner's employers know where he is parking and are happy with it, then I don't see a problem. Perhaps you could suggest to her that if she is so concerned about the legalities of parking on the street she should phone the Police and waste their time as well as yours and your partner's employers?

ignore her, you're quite within your rights to park as many vehicles as you want, unless there are highway parking or landlord restrictions.

Is your house a leasehold? If so, might be worth checking the regulations in the lease, some prevent parking of commercial vehicles but usually only with proper car parks.

Is it a private road or adopted by the local authority?

It's not illegal as its only a small van. Some areas do have overnight parking bans in place for commercial vehicles but these tend to relate to 5 tonnes and upwards.

She is confused and is thinking that the law that applies to lorries applies to commercials vans
"Is it lawful to park a lorry on the public highway?
If the lorry is over 3.5 tonnes in weight (for example anything substantially bigger than a transit van), it should not be parked on the public highway. However, this only applies when the lorry is not in use, such as overnight and at weekends, and some lorries may be exempt."
This does not apply to vans.

Thanks everyone! Yes, she's a nosey old bag with nowt better to do. We own the house, but there are council flats at the end of the street & the grass outside the front of the house is council maintained, if that might make a difference? My partner is wanting to have an easy life & park his van round the corner, but i'm adamant he doesnt. Having spoke to my next door neighbour today, ive found out that at one time or another she's had a dispute with most of the street. Unfortunately they seem like they enjoy criminal damage as my neighbour had a plumber round and his tyres were "mysteriously" slashed. I can't be doing with that happening to my car so i still don't know what my next move will be.......................???
