Did anyone not return to work after maternity leave?

Hello there, I am due to return to work in a couple of months time after maternity leave but the company I work for have declined my request to return part time, I would have to return full time.

I am swaying towards not going back and the reasons for this is the cost of childcare and the amount of time I would have to leave my child for - I think it is too much too soon.

I would continue to look for a part time job once I hand in my notice and I just wondered how other people got on after giving up full time work. I know it depends on everyones personal situation with regarsd to money etc (we are not entitled to any financial help as my other half earns too much £25k gross per annum).

I have written my notice and am building up the courage to post it as once its gone, there's no going back!

If you decide to pack in and look for part time work, go for it. A firm who can't / won't accommodate a new mother isn't going to be supportive when the inevitable measles / chickenpox dramas come along, so dump them asap. You will know best what's available part time near where you live. Remember also your partner could claim working tax credits, and maybe help with council tax, while you are not working.
I worked with a girl who wanted to come back part-time and the company refused......she threatened to go to an employment lawyer and they soon gave in....it actually worked out pretty well as they arranged job sharing for her.....
A long time ago we decided that I would stay at home with our first baby. We had a second baby only 17 months later and then a third so I had 3 under 5's. My word money was tight but I did part time when and where I could ( cleaning and childminding mostly with the odd bit of temping ) I can honestly say it was worth it as you will never get that precious time back . And.... the excitement of having takeaway fish and chips as an extra special treat once every few months. I eventually went to work as a Pre-school playgroup leader and did that for years.
don't hand your notice in Louise, that is what they want, they are trying to perform you out and it is a scandal! Don't give them an inch, and certainly don't resign, let thme make you redundant, you'll at least get dole then, swines.
Hi don't send your notice yet, I don't know when exactly but you do not have to give them your decision as to whether you are going back yet. The direct gov website probably tells you more about your rights. Look for part time work now then you have longer to find a job. Have the company given you a valid reason for refusing your request? It is now the law that they have to have a good reason for not allowing employees to go part time like it would be a massive impact on the business rather than they just don't want you to.
I agree with someone else who said it seems to be what they want, don't do it unless you have to!
