Hello,

I am considering giving up my council flat with the view of buying in another borough. Will I get some money from the council which I could use towards my deposit?

Why would you think the council would give you money to help buy a property that is not the one you live in?

Your right to buy, with a discount, if you are eligible, is for the property you rent now.

This Q is not as preposterous as it might first seem. A few years ago tenants in London with an Irish background were offered a deal. If they surrendered the tenancy of their London flat, the Council would buy them a house in Ireland.
Get in contact with the Housing Dept of your local council. Ask what they'd pay you to surrender your tenancy.
That was a few years ago. You can ask but the answer will pretty much be 'no'.
Most councils just love to have their council houses back (or have them accessible to new tenants via the Housing Association they work with, if not).
about 4-5 years ago my father moved out of his council house into an old peeps home and he got £2,000 for giving the house up and to help with removals etc.
I believe that if you were to move into the other council flat as a tenant (maybe via an exchange) then after 12 months you would have the right to buy that flat, and you would be eligible for a discount based on the number of years you have been a council tenant (including the years you have occupied your current flat) at least, this used to be the case where I live - you will need to check your council's current policy.
