Notice period

I have been in my job for 15 years but the last 3 I have been unhappy to the point that I got myself another job that has a starting date of the 2nd June. My problem is that under my contract of employment I have to give a months notice. What could happen if I only gave a weeks notice. I am in my late 50's and not trying to carve a career just a easier less stressfull job .

In theory, they could sue you for any losses they suffer as a result of you not giving them the contractual notice. Things could get sticky if they refuse to honour any holiday accrued (payment in lieu), or even not pay you for your last month (if you are paid in arrears).

Tell them tomorrow, and you will only have given them a week or so less than you should – hopefully they will be understanding.

I'd agree with that.
Use any remaining holiday entitlement you may have to work out an effective leaving date that is later than 2nd June, but you want the final days off as leave.
Probably won't get you to one months' notice, but might cushion their pain a bit.

I would prefer to leave on the right terms, as I work in a school I am retained for 45 weeks of the year so I cannot use Holiday as in lieu of notice . But as the workplace is now starting to affect my health I have to take the necessary steps of moving on. I rather lose my pay than my health.
Thanks for your speedy replies.

Yes, most organisations understand and accept this.
