I purchased a HP CQ70 Laptop about 3 years ago, not done a great deal on it, just this site, ebay, Amazon & searching for bits, I noticed the lid was getting a bit stiff but never give it any other though, I decide to get a new HP a lighter in weight for carrying a Compact, going back to the Original, I give this to my daughter she never said anything about the lid until the Hinges Snapped away from the stupid bad designed location on the Lid's body, I then started to look on H.P.s Forum only to find out the amount of people that's had the same issue with no positive response from H.P. regards a replacement Lid, I sent them a letter tonight with my disgust at their poor quality product but did state, I'm sure the Body of the Laptop was moulded by H.P. but an independent company, has anyone else had this Issue & was it rectified by H.P.? I have within the last 10mins been in contact with Watchdog as I do believe the Lid / Base " Not the workings" are not fit the purpose of it's intension, and that being the lid moulding can not stand the weight of the 17" lid, your comments would be welcomed.

Not sure why you didn't replace it with a tablet if all you're doing is surfing the web and you wanted something light.

With respect Zac, that's not the Issue.
Had a similar problem with a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. The lid got really stiff, and one hinge was all bent and I had to be very careful when closing it. My friend fixed it for me as best he could, but I still have to handle it with care. Nothing wrong with the "workings" though, and I've been generally very pleased with it.

Ah! that puts an entirely different meaning on things!
My commiserations to you, had exactly the same problem about 2 years ago with a different HP Laptop model to yours, but found lots of others on the HP Community forum complaining about same problem with other model types. Ended up sourcing the HP replacement parts, for a fraction of the UK HP spares cost, from UK & Hong Kong and repaired it myself instead of paying 'wodges' of money (£310) for HP repairs (replaced the LID and the silly flimsy metal hinges for £43 delivered.)

I believe that not only is the hinge design flawed, the hinges are factory set too tight putting a greater strain on the hinges when open/closed motion, thus eventually shearing the plastic lid hinge mounting points.

Based on my experience and reading others comments I don't think you will get anywhere with complaints or threats to HP unless its is covered by warranty.

But I could be proved wrong!

Pink, I've read your post & looked up on the links, regards the Product, the laptop workings are of good quality but the holder, casing, Retainer call kit what you like is not fit for purpose, I glued the Screw Fixing points back in their correct place & left them to "set" then as soon as the screen was affix the issue arose again, the weight of the screen is too much for the fixing points, for persons that has not taken the laptop apart, the fixing point are half the size of a cigarette tip, & thinner, HP put / Screw their components into this substandard casing then the Laptop is complete, to me even if the warrantee is out H.P. has a duty to put this right, regards complaints, that's what I have done, Threats! NO, I have contacted Watchdog about a product that that is let down by a substandard casing.
After owning the Laptop for over two years you will Not get much joy from contacting HP and Watchdog.

Under two years and you could be in with a chance for compensation. :-

I had the same problem with the lid of my 17" HP G70 laptop. As I'd had it for a few years I just gave up on it and bought a new Lenovo 15.6" laptop.

I do miss having a 17" laptop as I was into desk top publishing and liked the large screen.

Hans, I take on-board what you say, the electrical Components of the Laptop has given no problem, the problem lies with a design fault backed up by the many Forums on the Web Eg/ H.P. Yahoo, also many although I have not sought, yes, the unit is above 3 years old but you do not expect the unit to become unusable due to the lid Hinge retaining Lugs snapping & causing the lid not to be extended to the upright position and can not be repaired as it is a part of the Mouldings ( " Hence" Design Fault ) the point I am trying to make to H.P. I will have to see.
My heart is on your side in this matter. However,unless an item of equipment has been guaranteed for three years, it is pointless pursuing an issue with a Retailer or Manufacturer for a failure which occurs after the EU's statutory 2year period. Even taking the matter to Court could involve considerable cost and it is extremely doubtful that a decision would be in your favour.

No problem Hans, I like a challenge with the big boys, I've won a few that cost me Nil, I've had a look in repairing the unit myself, by removing the old lug bases, cleaning the base completely, using some small pieces of wood & super glued to where the lugs where, to be continued loll watch this space.
Fettle yourself one of these, far sturdier.

Not much Chance of the Hinge snapping on that one Mam lol lol I doubt H.P. will respond but I will continue, I'm not the one for backing down, as said the electronics are A1, It's the Rubbish Design of the Hinge Brackets.
