I received no letter of acknowledgement. The lease was awarded to someone else. Only one person was interviewed and their bid was accepted which was £1000 less than the one I submitted.

The lease was advertised in the local paper. What process does the club (if any ) have to go through when deciding whom to award the lease to. Do they have any legal obligations ?

did they even receive your bid ? seems strange it was not acknowledged
When you say club, can you explain loosely?

If its a members club then the members can decide on the criteria for selection. If say a football club, then the directors wuld choose based on various factors. money would be one criteria but maybe the style of food and proposed menu/opening hours is a bigger factor.

Only if the establishment is in the public sector would a transparent process be required as its in the pipublic interest.

Rude not to send any correspondence or an acknowledgement though. I think you're best off out!
The club will have its own rules

The club members will or may have access to those and are the only ones who can enforce them (by internal procedures )

The club can if its members want, award a contract to the club captains mother in law - but it cant resolve to do anything unlawful - like sell horse meat as beef stew

and that is about it

Sorry
it is almost certainly an unincorporated association

and if you goggle 'the law of unincorporated associatiations' a discussion document comes up from Scotland about reform which has the current status. ( which I have downloaded and now cant find the source URL)

basically it has little legal status so the liability ( always ) falls back onto the members without limitations ( oo-er if you are a member ! )

re lease. Its a sailing club which is a member of the RYA. It is a members club run by a committee. No club members were aware of the lease tender.
Its possible the members were unaware of the lease, and the committee would argue that they have delegated authority to deal with such matters. If a member is interested in the running of the club, they should ask the committee for a report on this.

You could write/email and ask for an update on the selection process and the status of your application reminding them that you haven't heard since submitting it.

Can you be sure the received it and can you be sure the lease is granted elsewhere or could it be hearsay?

I would say the committee have awarded it to one of their own. Just put a lease bid notice out to make it look correct. Typical club behaviour .
They will have covered themselves by having a clause that says something like ''The club is not bound to accept any bid'' Nothing you can do, you are well off out of it.

re lease. The letter was hand delivered to the secretary. The lease has been awarded as the previous incumbent was approached with a view to purchasing his catering equipment. He also knows to whom the lease was awarded and the amount bid
Could you politely ask for feedback on what discouraged them in your bid so you can improve them in the future ?
