Adding a name to Deeds of House

Hello

My father is 91 - my mother died 10 years ago but is still named with my father on the Deeds of the House. He wants to add my name to the Deeds but has been told it could cost £400 + Is this correct or is there another way round it?

sorry i don't know the answer to that. it seems strange that it wasn't sorted out when your mum died - wouldn't it usually be done with her will etc? are you sure she's still named?
Phone your local Land Registry for advice. If the house is Registered they will send you the correct forms with guidance notes both to remove your mother's name and add yours.

There will be fees to pay, but not £400.
removing your late mother's name does not cost anything. Adding yours depends on the value of the house, you can calculate here.

If there is still a mortgage on the house then you will need to discuss it with the mortgagor and the advice is to get it done professionally

Yes because my father has just retrieved the Deeds from his Bank and she is named on them.!
bednobs, no, My late husband's name stayed on our deeds until quite recently because I was the executor and I hadn't removed it.
Is the house registered at the land registry at all?
but if they are paper deeds, then the name would still be on there - i was thinking about the electronic version at the lr if there is one
That's what made me ask if the house was registered at all.

I'm afraid he lives 100 miles from me so will have to check when I am next visting
you can look online...it costs 4 quid to see if the house is registered and who owns it.

I added my daughter's name to the deeds. I went to the Citizen's Advice Bureau, they passed me on to their solicitor. It cost me about £300 in total and took about atwo months to be completed.
if there is no mortgage or other charge on the property, it is probably quicker and cheaper to do it yourself directly with the land registry.
Yes it is! Change of name applications are the LR's bread and butter work. Give them a ring (or visit them if have an LR near to you) and they can talk you through everything, they are very helpful and should make the process very easy.
I second this, they have been very helpful to me on two occasions.
I worked at the LR for 23 years, perhaps im a little biased!
