What else is required for pre sentencing?

My son was found guilty of sexual assault. He pleaded. It guilty be ause he is innocent. He has just seen probation officer for pre sentence report. Firstly, could he still get non custodial sentence although he was held in custody and do we need any other documents for sentencing? Are character references helpful?
