Absolutely yes. A lot of care workers today have had troubled pasts, but they have turned their lives around and can use their experience to help others.
In an enhanced disclosure as needed for care work, all convictions show up even spent ones. So the conviction will show. If you get the job or not is down to the person or company offering it. As it was a long time ago they may still be willing to offer you a job.The best thing is to be honest about it and explain that it was a long time back and you are a different person now.
Do not try to pretend that it never happened though.
You can get a job, but it is down to you to convince them that you have changed and it will never happen again.

23 years without re-offending - yes, I think you could use this positively in the manner that mastercraft outlines.
I would think if i was an employer I would want to know exactly the circumstances which resulted in being charged with actual bodily harm.
Maybe not the perfect profession for you to be in (caring) in this day and age - now a changed person or not. With all the publicity surrounding assaults in care homes I would think they would avoid employing anyone with an ABH background just to be on the safe side.
