I have recently had a new job offer after being made redundant 3 months ago. Upon leaving my old job my employer said they would be happy to give a reference. Would it be a bad thing if I contacted my old employer just warning them that they will be asked to give a reference for my new employer? Thanks

No harm in doing so,but probably not necessary.

Thanks
Maybe not necessary but courteous.
It's a good idea to put the old employer in the picture and to thank him for promising a good reference...
Entirely unnecessary, to be realistic you will just be generating more "junk" mail for them to deal with.

Good point Methyl, one I hadn't considered.
It's a good idea, as others have said - only courteous.
