Hi everyone, I have been a legal secretary for 32 years and have recently left this line of work because I was in so much pain in my hands and it was determined by the doctor, hospital etc that I shouldn't be doing job anymore as typing has been the cause of the pain. I am now unemployed and looking for something part time in a different field (I am not sure what). Would I be able to claim any benefits? i.e. job seekers or whatever they call it these days? Thanks all.

If you left voluntarily from your last job there might be a problem claiming
Go to your local Citizens Advice Bureau, they should be able to provide you full details of what you are entitled to and give help with filling out forms.
Might be an idea to get a note from your doctor.
What you should have done is gone on sick and then taken it from there rather than leave voluntarily.

Hi Jezza I have been on sick since January and just receiving SSP as my place of employment do not pay any sick pay whatsoever. However after 26 weeks my SSP run out and so I thought I had no alternative really but to leave my job as they didn't have any other role for me.
Best to go to the job centre and ask them about benefits and suitable jobs. They'll tell you exactly where you stand and might even help find a new line of work.
Well strictly speaking, you were not able to do the job, so they should have got rid rather than you walking.
Does your GP suggest that your hand problems are as a result of your job, if so you could enquire about Industrial Injuries Benefit. Again best speak to CAB or a Welfare Rights Officer for your area.
This is a well-known disability resulting from years of typing. Ask the CAB how to go about getting compensation. It does not matter if you left voluntarily. And dont worry about what the employer may think. Their insurers will pay.
