Sick Line/ Self certificate

The young alba came home from work yesterday as he was unwell. He phoned in this morning to say he won't be in today and was told to bring in a sick-line on Monday.
It's my understanding that you have to be off for a week before you need one from the doctor but how would he go about getting a 'sick-line' for a day and a half?

Seems a bit silly to me.
