Supply Teacher Rates of Pay.

Does anybody know what the average rate of pay for a supply teacher is?

When I was a school secretary a few years ago, we used to get a list of supply teachers and the rate varied as to experience, etc.

Newly qualified ones were very cheap compared to the long service ones.

This teacher would have approx/over 10 years of experience at secondary school level, teaching science and supervising other teachers.

I did a bit of Supply Teaching about 10 years ago and I got £100/day. I was with an agency.

There is no standard rate any longer. It varies from agency to agency. Some pay better than others and will recognise experience, others do a simple flat rate. You can look at £70 a day upwards - don't do it for any less.

It depends pretty much on what point on the teachers' pay scale you are on. Outside London it can be as low as £90 but i would suggest you can expect to get at least £100 a day + employer pension. I look for £150. In London higher rates apply. The rates sound good but of course as you don't get separate paid holidays the rate includes holiday pay, and you do pay NI, pension, tax and student loan repayment on the money.

As a retired teacher, if it was £1000 per day you still would not tempt me back. All the money in the world cannot replace peace of mind.

With the right groups, mike1111, it's really rewarding, but I can see your point and am considering making the same choice as you.
It's soul destroying when you spend ages preparing lessons for classes when so many students don't want to be there, don't bring any equipment, don't listen to a word you say or write down anything, chase each other round the room, constantly demand the toilet, drink red bull, cause disruption by farting, refuse to follow any instructions..... I'm sure you saw it all

I currently do supply teaching in the midlands, and have worked for two different agencies. The first one paid £120 a day, but did not find me much work. The second one paid £110 a day but I could have worked virtually every day. Have you tried approaching your local LEA as they often have a supply service, which obviously gets preference. Hope this helps.
