Fitness trainer

My son would like to work in the fitness industry, He has looked at the government apprenticeship scheme but no luck in London! He is working at the moment (but hates it), any suggestions (apart from the ads in papers which cost the earth!)?

Hi Crapmemory

If you go on the website www.lifetimehf.co.uk - they do various fitness courses - and some are free government run ones too.

They have different venues all around the country.

My son recently applied for their Personal Trainer course - he was accepted and went for a 'selection day' in Chancery Lane, London - but unfortunately his BTEC Level 3 Fitness Instructor Diplomas (which he gained after 2 years at Sixth Form College) were not acceptable by them - apparently to get into the Personal Trainer course you have to have REPS Level 2 Fitness Trainer.

I know for a fact that their REPS Fitness Trainer course is starting with them in London at the end of April, so give them a ring, they may be able to help.

Good Luck

Hi Crapmemory, I'm was a Level 2 Fitness Instructor, but after 4 years of working in the industry, I have just completed my Level 3 Personal Training Certificate.

Most local colleges run Level 2 courses mine was done through the YMCA and because at the time, I wasn't working the course, which ran for 8 weeks cost about 36.

Buy a Floodight course book and see what courses are available in your area. If you do them privately through a company like Premier or even the YMCA, you are looking at paying over 1000.

If your son want's to work in the Fitness Industry as an instructor, then he mus have a minimum of Level 2. A trainer cannot instruct unless they are alsoregistered with REPS (The Register of Exercise Professionals)
