He was the founder of the Microsoft corporation.
He has the final say in approving software, making financial decisions etc.
There was an interesting program showing a day in his life on BBC2 last Friday.

He retired from from Microsoft this week. He will continue to run his own charitable foundation which does massive things quietly. eg provided the pc's for public libraries in england in 2002.
I expect he will also potter down to the post office, watch a lot of daytime telly and get a Togs sweatshirt.
