2nd Class Honours

A son of a friend of mine says he got 69% in exams and if he had got 1% more to equal 70% it would have been classed as 1st Class honours. As 2nd class honours ranges from 60% to 69% would it be worthwhile for him to appeal the 69% to see if it could be made up to 70%. At least they could hardly drop him to under 60%. Any views on this would be appreciated and have any appealed similiar exam results. Thanks.

Can't hurt trying.

But I'm confused as to how they distinguish those who score 80something or 90something if 70something is already 1st class honours.
Sounds like my previous paper boy who told me he got 3 "O" levels, two Ds and an E. In my day these would have been fails.
Wouldn't they are been CSE's Maggie?
Getting off the point, but did they award CSE passes for failed GCEs ? I thought they were different exams / boards. That said I was told a CSE grade 1 was considered scaping a pass at O level.
Think we have a different system in Scotland but giving my age away by mentioning "O" levels. What we have is:

• The 5-14 programme which defines the curriculum from P1-P7 and S1and 2
• The standard grade programme in S3 and 4
• Higher grade courses studied in S5, but also available to those in S6; and
• The Advanced Higher taken by most able S6 students.

Students at the end of S2 choose the “Standard Grade” courses they will study in S3-S4. Standard Grade is broadly similar to GCSE. These are examined at three levels of increasing difficulty: Foundation, General and
Credit. Students generally study 7 subjects and at least one science is compulsory. Grade allocations range
from 1(highest) to 7(lowest).
• Grades 1-2 are credit
• 3-4 are general
• 5-6 are foundation
7 indicates ”course completed”
I was in a similar situation and I was told any grades in the first or last 1% of a honours banding are double-moderated to make sure the end mark is in the right band. Maybe this varies from one uni to another though.
I think that you are fighting a losing battle here. I
Did he have a viva?
Sorry about that last posting. I submitted it by mistake. I do not think that he will get anywhere with this. My friend at school missed out on a C in English by just 1 mark and was not impressed. There has to be a cut off point and your friend is on the end of it.
That would make sense bushbaby and while it's frustrating for your friend the 69% would have been made up of several units rather than one paper. You have just the same chancee of getting all the other results - 68% 67% 71% etc.
You don't (not at a proper university at least) score 80 or 90%. When I was a student I was told that 70% was reserved for first class students, 71 - 80% was reserved for the professor, 81 - 90% was reserved for the professor's professor, and 91 -100% was reserved for God.
maggie, the 5-14 is gone now alnong with some of the High school stuff too and been replaced with CfE (Curriculum for Excellence) - trying to get to crips with it all now!
