to go self employed. ? He is nearly 62 and has been thinking of going self employed so he can help our son in law out in his business. At the moment we get Council Tax help but nothing else since my husband lost his job. We both have a very small private pension and so therefore we have "enough to live on" according to the Social services. But we are finding it just isn't enough as we are still paying a mortgage plus other bills. If he went self employed will we lose the council tax help.?

Council Tax Benefit is related to income, not to the source of that income. (i.e. it's available whether someone is employed or self-employed).

Correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't worked in accounts for years now, but didn't the rules of self employment change?

I thought you could no longer work for just one employer and still be self employed.

Ok I would be interested to know if that is the case. Would anyone know please?
If queried, I believe you may have to demonstrate that you have done work for more than one "company/person". If you cannot I believe HMRC may deem you to be employed, and different rules kick in with regard to National Insurance Contributions.
See the following link to decide on whether he is entitled to Self Employed or Employee status:

Obviously a lot depends on the type of work being carried out
