just on the phone to my mobile insurers - firstly they informed me they use voice software to tell if you are lying (this made my voice go a bit squeaky!) secondly, they took me through some "publicly available information" to see if i was lying like asking me where i lived before and how old my sister in law was!

Is this how things are nowadays?

no, i rang them to make a claim
Name & shame bednobs.
I am sure a lot of people (not you obviously) who fancy a new phone "pretend" they have lost their phone (or had it stolen) to try to claim a new one.

They have to put in these security checks to try to remove (or scare) those people who are lying.

its tesco mobile insurance - not sure who the underwriters are
Very common now bednobs , a lot of insurance companies do it. It scares off some fraudulent claimants .
By the way they ask questions like 'where do you live' to set a standard for your voice when you are not lying so they can see if it changes when they ask the 'real' questions .
