I have a ten year old Worcester 24CDI combi boiler and my problem is that I cannot get hot water from it unless I turn on the central heating as well. I have got a plumber coming round to see it and give me a quote, but he's not able to visit until next week - which does not bother me - we have been without hot water for several weeks, so a few more days isn't really a worry.
I just hoped that someone on ABcould suggest what it might be, and give me an idea of what it might cost to repair. I spoke to a friend a few weeks ago and he suggested that it might be the diverter valve, is this likely? Thanks for (sensible) suggestions.

My Daughter had exactly the same. When the plumber came round he was speaking to the landlord and said the part he need was about £15 and the landlord told him to go ahead with it.... It was great having hot water without the heating making the house like a sauna. Sorry I can be more help islasmum. Hope you get some it sorted and some idea of cost from Abers before the plumber comes.
I had that problem with my combi and it was the diverter valve.

Was it very expensive to fix 237SJ?

Thanks Mazie, very glad to hear that your daughters boiler got fixed so easily.
Oops. Just saw the last two lines of your post. My plumber told me that he wouldn`t be able to do the job as well as Vaillant and suggested I contact them. So I did and they had two sort of service plans to fix the problem. One was a boiler check and repair (excluding the condenser) and the other plan included the condenser. I went for the one without the condenser because I was pretty sure that it was the diverter valve that had gone. I can`t remember what I paid - a couple of hundred pound I think but that was for the full works. Anyway, when the guy came her was here for ages and said that he had ended up putting at least £500 worth of parts in the boiler. So my gamgle paid off and I got a bargain. I doubt Vaillant were too pleased though.
Quite possibly the diverter valve (approx £100 plus fitting - maybe £200 total)
Possibly, as in Mazie's case, a simple sensor.

Anything could go wrong on a boiler. It could even be the circuit board allowing both CH and HW, but not separately.

I'm afraid it's all unhelpful guesswork until it's been looked at.

Thank you all for your answers, I will keep my fingers crossed for it being like Mazie's daughter's boiler!
