Home appliances insurance

I've got a Domestic & General policy on my central-heating boiler, had it for several years in fact. It's been okay. They come out (or rather send Baxi out) when there's a problem, and often fix it on the first visit.

But the premium, which I can remember as being £90 per annum some years back, creeps up each year, and is now £230 each year. Does this sound like a reasonable amount? I'm losing touch with prices! It only covers the boiler - not the radiators or piping.

Or are there any other companies, equally as good or better than D&G?

Thanks.

Allen.

is it a gas boiler?
If so, even british gas i think are cheaper, and that's saying something!
Yep just took mine out with British Gas and it's cheaper. Give them a ring.
Don't forget the actual Boiler is NOT Insured, only the repair if they can do it,if not,YOU need to replace Boiler. Speaking from Personal experience.

Yes it's Gas, no to British Gas (too many stories of problems with them), and yes the boiler itself is insured - for replacement up to £1500 odd. Maybe that's why the premium seems to high.

What do you get for your £230, does that cover labour too if they have to come out? I pay £60 a year to a local plumber for the annual maintenance and then I get a discount if repairs are necessary.

Hello Boxtops.

Yes, labour, parts, call-out, the lot. It's NOT an emergency service, so if your boiler claps out in the middle of winter, they might take a few days to get to you. But the policy definitely says that they'll replace the boiler, up to £1500, if it's beyond repair. Hasn't happened yet. Oh, and you do get an annual service thrown in for nothing as part of the £230.

And the other thing, but this is common with most repair firms, is that they might come the first time and then have to come back because they haven't got the part (!) - but as I say, this is the same for dishwasher, cooker, etc.

I think D&G are as good as most, except for the fact that the premium leaps up each year.

Try your fuel supplier. I have my gas boiler covered by EON, my fuel supplier. I pay £13.25/month for insuring the boiler and associated controls plus annual service. I suspect your premium is high if, as you say, they will replace the boiler should it be unrepairable.

From personal experience I wouldn't touch British Gas either. If BG was the only company offering this cover I would go all electric.
