If you are completely sure you gave them the correct information, then make a formal complaint in writing. If it is not successful you have the right to go to an independent adjudicator (there are at least 2 different ones & your insurer should give you the details when they reply to your complaint).
This process is going to take some time, so in your complaint letter ask them to continue with the insurance until the complaint is resolved, unless you are able to get cover elsewhere. Your complaint must be in writing & you need to make sure it goes to the correct department & address - the company must give you this information if you ask for it. Keep a copy of all letters etc. & send by recorded delivery.
