With the exception of the charging structure, your phone will always work (anywhere in the world) exactly as if you're in the UK. (That's because all of your calls are routed through the UK system).

So you can phone your friends in the UK (or anywhere else in the world where they're using mobile phones signed up to a UK provider) by just calling their normal numbers. But if you want to call your Spanish hotel, you'll still have to enter the international dialling code for Spain (+34) even if you're just around the corner from it.

Many thanks Chris.
If you are on pay as you go it may cost you a LOT of money to make calls and texts in Spain so check the price before you make all those calls.
Also check if you will be charged to receive calls when roaming. Sometimes it was more expensive to receive than make!!
Also phone your service provider before you go abroad and check that the "Roaming" feature is enabled on your phone.
Top tip. Always turn off your answer phone service when you go abroad because you get charged to receive calls also. It will only take a few messages at really high rates to wipe out your 5 or 10 top up on your PAYG and then you will not be in a position to use the phone when you need to. Always put a security pin on your phone because phone theft in certain counties is high
