combi-boiler

I am thinking of having the old, conventional boiler replaced with a combi-boiler. I don't want this to be re-fitted where the existing one is. The engineer suggested fitting it in a cupboard in my bedroom but did warn that they have a fan which creates some noise. If I have it fitted in the kitchen, ie moved from upstairs, does that mean loads of pipes running across the kitchen walls? Anyone any thoughts / suggestions please? Suejen (Mon 12:03 25/Oct/04)

smudge		(Mon 13:05 25/Oct/04) Our neighbours changed their boiler to a combi last year & are very happy with it. We are thinking of doing the same, but look forward to some helpful answers & any pro's & con's, before we do.

tcmccorry		(Mon 17:40 25/Oct/04) Absolutly, a gas boiler in a bedroom is not a good idea. You are supposed to get a boiler checked and serviced every year not only to check it is working but also that it is safe i.e gas leakes or fumes from the boiler are very dangerous. the last thing you would want is something to go wrong while you are sleeping. As for the pipes if you have a conventional ventilated system with a f&e tank in the loft and a hotwater cylinder you should end up having a lot less pipes in your house using a combi boiler.
smudge		(Mon 18:22 25/Oct/04) Sorry to hijack your question Sue, but our existing boiler is in the garage & the hot water tank is in a cupboard in the spare bedroom. Am I right in thinking that once the combi boiler is installed (say in the garage again) there is no need for a tank in the bedroom, as it acts somewhat like the old Ascot type constant hot water thingy that Mum & Dad used to have years ago? My husband could tell me all this, but he's out at the minute!

TEAK36		(Tue 08:23 26/Oct/04) I had a combi boiler fitted 6 weeks ago and I am delighted with it.No more water tank at the top of the stairs.I would not want one in my bedroom though as they do make a noise every time the hot water is used.
ianess		(Tue 14:33 26/Oct/04) Agree with TEAK36.........in our last house we had a new combi fitted in a bedroom.......perfectly safe.....only problem was the noise when it fired up.... and the fan ran on for a good while after the water was shut off. It was convenient because of the short pipe runs to the taps but wouldn`t really want to do it again. We still have a combi but miss not having an airing cupboard too......something else to consider.
