sending copy of passport via email or fax

I am having to do this, for security reasons to open an account they have to prove I am resident at the property.

Due to me being a tenant, i am not a bill payer and therefore not registered under the property but as i have no utiliy bills in my name they are happy with a copy of my passport and a utility bill in the bill payers name.

I would like to ask how risky sending this info via email or fax as they request is??? Which of the two fax or email would be the safest form.

Any info please.

On further thought, this sounds very fishy.

Your passport does not prove where you live - you may have moved home several times since it was issued as they usually last 10 years. It does not prove it is you, either, as you could have found or stolen the passport. They don't know what you look like.

I should imagine a bank Ethel?

Is there any reason why you can't pop into your local bank with your passport rather than faxing/emailing it?

I'm with Ethel- for owt as daft as bingo, I wouldn't send them something as confidential as passport info either.

The company is registered in Nevada, so any protection offered by UK courts and legislation is probably not applicable.

they usually ask for id - passport / driving licence - dont have one of these.

and also a utiliy bill in your name , but as i dont have a bill in my name what can they do my 1 bank is online with no paper based bills.

So they said copy passport and bill in other name.

Problem is I have had this problem before and they shut the whole account down, lucky i have 25p on the account when they did this so I told them to just close the account rather than me sending info to them.

With this new account though I have already deposited £100 and spent £25 when they discovered there was a problem with the registered address and my name. So there is a chance they will not return the money without the info.

Dunno what to suggest then. Off top of my head I can't remember exactly what info is on a passport other than the obvious things like your photo and your full name and DOB. Is there like a passport number on it or something? I'd be tempted to mask that and any other info other than the bare necessaties before faxing/emailing it.

As for which option is safer- I imagine both are much of a sameness- neither are 100% safe I'm afraid.

The reason they do this is because it's now a requirement that they try to prevent anyone under 18 gambling... so because they can't check you out on the electoral roll ( because you don't show up) they are asking for age validating ID.
I had to do this with william Hill's when I was playing poker because I'd just moved.
That was fine in my case, but I don't know anything about this company to advise you.

A fax is safer security wise as long as there is someone at the far end to receive it
