BT house phone!

Hi. I don't know if this is a really stupid question....but.....
I've just bought a set of BT Freelance XD 1500 phones, according to the instructions they should be ;plug and play'....so I've plugged in the the power cord and the phone line, the phones light up and show displays, all of the bases light up, but I have no dailing tone! Here's the stupid question....do they only work on a BT line....I'm with a different provider?

They might not be truly plug and play - maybe they DO need to charge first. And are they plugged in the phone socket?

sorry if this is an obvious question but have you pressed the button to dial? as on my phone, you don't get a dial tone until you press the button to start the call.

Thanks for your replies......
Panic over!!! Number one son thought hje would save time when setting them up by not swapping the phone cable over from the old phones....turns out that was the problem....God help him when he start6s his A levels in September!!!!! lol
