How it Works

I.d to prove you are 18

What proof do you need to show you are 18? My son does not have a provisional driving licence, and his passport expired last year.

I have googled for info and found different repies.

Can anyone point me to the correct card he has to apply for.

Thanks

Why not get a provisional driving licence?

Licence and passport are about the only ID accepted widely.

Apply for a provisional license, my son did this just to prove his age, he didn't take a driving lesson until well after his 18th birthday! As far as I remember, you need his birth certificate and a reference or personal letter from someone unrelated to him who know him and can verify for his character.
Oh, and remember, there are two parts to the licence - the plastic part which he can carry around to prove his age, and the paper part, which I would advise you to keep safe for him. I lost the paper part, we applied for a new one, and when my son passed his theory test, he left the new one in his shirt pocket and it went through the wash.....Doh!! I made him pay for the second replacement!

thanks guys. But my son has no intention of taking driving lessons, and the provisional licence is so bloody expensive.

I have seen this when googling and would this be the thing he has to go for?

Strangely some places will only accept it as proof of ID if you present the paper part as well as the card.

Also you could argue that a recently expired passport still proves ID, as long as your appearance hasn't changed. Unfortunately most jobsworths don't see this.

the driving licence is a hell of a lot cheaper then a passport...unless hes planning to renew and use it? Passports and Driving licence are really the only safe option for id

Does it matter if his passport has expired, it still shows his date of birth so would have thought it could still be accepted as ID - maybe someone else will know if I am wrong, it was just a thought :)

it all seems crazy to me, when I was his age, I was working 2 jobs and one of them was in a bar!!

He has no need to get provisional, buses etc, plus off to uni in Sept. Seems a hell of a lot of money to spend any way, just so he can go out and celebrate his 18th

Jules, his passport expired last year... so I doubt it would be OK as his pic on there was when he was so much younger.

Reading through the link you provide, it seems a citizencard should suffice for boozing, and it includes the following paragraph:

Application forms for half-price CitizenCards are available from branches of One Stop, JD Wetherspoon, Thresher, Ladbrokes and William Hill.

hi Panic Button, yes I looked through it too, and thought it would be OK. Son just wants something to prove he is actually 18 so he can go out and have a beer with his mates (all holders of full driving licences btw) on his birthday

Chances are a barman looking at a passport for the date of birth wouldn't think to check if the passport had
expired!

(Particularly if the holder opens it to point to the date of birth)

For a few pounds, you can get a copy of his birth certificate while you wait, from your local Registrar.

Petal-flower, the ONLY thing that is guaranteed to get him in is either a driving licence or passport.

Our son turned 18 recently and we went to the local police, and the local council, to ask what ID he should get.

They gave us the name of one of those "18 plus" cards like you mentioned and we got one for him.

The first time he tried to use it in a local club they refused to let him in.

We went to Bultins for a weekend, and they would not accept the card as proof.

In the end we got him a driving license.

Save yourself a lot of bother and just get him a drivers license.

But for cheapness and speed - a birth certificate's got to be the best form of ID you can get!

A birth certificate is nowhere near adequate for ID purposes. How could he prove it's his certificate? It could belong to an older person. That is why all acceptable forms of ID have a photo.

Hiya Petal....I think just for ID purposes and prob the cheapest option would be to send off for a provisional driving licence, just pick up a form from the post office.

Thanks everyone

Is it just me then who thinks its bonkers to have to go and pay £50 to get a provisional driving licence . Just so he can go out and have a pint on his 18th birthday.

No it's not just you.

How can they justify £50?

Another of Gordon's hidden taxes.
