It would normally be in the room you spend most time in, since that's where you'd most want a comfortable temperature.
Traditionally builders always seem to put the main thermostat in the entrance hall, but that really isnt the best pace for it, as that is often the coldest place in the house, often with a draft from the front door.

If your radiators all have individual thermostats, then you can adjust each room to have its own comfort level, but if your rads are set fully on all the time, you may want to reposition your thermostat in the room where you spend most time in the evenings. Bedrooms dont need as much heat, and bath rooms and shower rooms need a little more.

If you can set an acceptable level of heat in your sitting room, chances are the other rooms will also be comfortable if the system was designed properly.
We have just had a new one fitter and we asked the engineer why and where he was going to put it..
He said it should go in a hall where there is no rad and no direct heat (kitchen) and no windows....so he put our one in our second floor hall way
As jaydj says.
The issue with putting it in the main room is that if you have a independent heat source (gas/electric fire), it forces the CH off in the rest of the house. Better to set a thermostat in the landing to a suitably low figure that allows adequate heat balance in the main rooms where you do sit.
we usually fit them half way up the stairs to give an even heat balance throughout the house

Hi thankyou all for your answers. we live in a bungalow which I should have said in my question. so it seems the hall is the best place for it. All rads. have there own thermostat except the hall one and the bathroom one is on full all the time.
The hall or landing is all-most always the most benificial place for the room stat. Since there is no individual thermostat on the radiator in you're hall then this is also you're best place for it. As we do not install individual TRV's to the rad in the same room as the room stat.
hi my parents had a new combi boiler installed recently and the engineer put the thermostat in the living room but did not fit a rad thermostat on the radiator in the same room when i asked him about it he said that you cant have both in the same room it's against the law. so when it gets to warm in the living room the room thermostat goes off because you cant turn down that radiator which means the rest off the house is not as warm as the living room should this be how it is. many thanks gary.
