Rating answers

What is the procedure for rating answers? I have had answers to my questions and must admit to not rating all of them. I hope I haven't offended anyone in the past for not rating their answers as I appreciate when people take the time to answer my queries. Is it seen as bad manners not to rate answers or are folk not bothered?

p.s. I realise there has been a similar discussion about this but decided to post anyway in case the attitude towards rating has changed.
Good of you Monty. It is always helpful to others to rate your answers as it helps other people to determine whether their answers helped you or not although, a simple thank you is probably quite adequate :o)
Myself personally I think that is is bad manners to read the answers given without some sort of appreciation. See ya!
I generally rate all answers to my questions with three stars simply because any answer is appreciated. what you do find is that people with an opinion related question tend to rate answers more highly if they agree to their point of view and lower if they don't. Personally I think its a waste having it at all, a simple thank you to all that answered is sufficient.
In fact I actually do think its bad manners not to acknowledge the people answering at all, but like I say the star system is a bit of a waste of time.
I always rate the answers unless I pose a folowup question or the original question leads to a bit of a discussion, so at least contributors can see you are responding to their answers.

Cheers guys for the replies. I agree that the star system is not great and that a personal 'thanks' is better. So....Thanks!!
:o)
I tend to post stars or a personal thanks on a factual question or if I am looking for help.....anything put up for debate type discussion I never bother rating in case someone thinks there is an inbuilt bias in my own views to the point.....so that's my view...but yes it is always nice to get a star or two especially if you have hunted down a link or put some effort into the answer.
Why can't I rate answers? Is there a level of contributions you have yo have made?
