Why do lots of the youtube combination clips I watch (things like funny cats, funny dogs etc) often have the view split into 3 vertical panels with the central one showing the clip and a panel either side all fuzzy?

This is why you should always remember to shoot video and take pictures horizontally.//
I have often wondered that but it is not only Youtube clips it can also be seen on television news reports.

The only thing I can think off the clips are taken on a phones camera, and it produces a picture in a different format to those of wide screen shots.

Well Mamya that is so obvious once you know! That reason never crossed my mind. Thanks!
It bugged me for quite a while, but yes it does make sense.
Sometimes you need a portrait picture rather than a landscape one - so if I'm taking photos for work, I take both portrait and landscape.

When we have profrssional photographers in I also ask if they can do both.
