I have a light in the conservatory which stopped working and when I tested it (with a neon screwdriver in one hand and t'other hand on earth) there is a live!!! I duly condemned the light/fan fitting to the tip but when I connected new light fitting it wont work. There is a live at each side of the wall switch and a live at the light fitting but no light!!!!! AAGGGHHHHH

Could there be a fault on neutral and if so how fettle it.. I'm in the dark, as it were!!

Indeed, if the live was reaching your light fitting, the issue has to be with the neutral.

Check each end of the cable to see they're connected ok. Check the ring at the consumer unit and all light fittings on the downstairs lighting cable.

Or save yourself the hassle and get an electrician in.

Yep 2nd option I feel 'cause all seems Ok Cheers
That's the trouble with neon testers. They don't indicate the neutral.
Electricians use a voltage tester which will show live, neutral, and earth......

The power for this light was taken from a light in the living room and as soon as I mentioned having changed that light fitting the problem was sussed straight away by the electrician. I had not made sure that the connections to the conservatory were not disturbed !!! I had let the neutral come loose in the light fitting!!!!!
