Alton Towers

Does anyone know the reason for why the oblivion ride breaks down so often and what causes it?

Also why was the thunder looper removed from the park?

No idea about Oblivion.  Part of the reason for the removal of the Thunderlooper was the noise and the fact that the locals could see it over the trees.

Yes, now all rides at AT cannot be built so that they are visible above any trees. Hence why Nemesis was built in a pit.

As for Olivion, it only seems to break down as often as Air or many other rides; I assume it's due to the sensitive nature of the ride's mechanisms. A near-vertical drop is hard to engineer, so some break downs can be expected before a better engineering idea is thought up.

I roller-coaster going into a vertical free-fall is not exactly hard to engineer.  The only real mechanics in a roller coaster is the initial incline and the brakes at the end.  Oblivion has the steepest incline of all the coasters there, also one of the highest.  It breaks down because its chain drive and rachet parts for the incline are badly manufactured so now and again it jams up.
