Farnborough to Waterloo, then taxi to St. Pancras?
Farnborough Main to Clapham Junction, change to London Overground to Willesden Junction, change to London Overground to Euston and 5 minute walk along Euston Road to St Pancras.

Or 59 bus.
....of course, factors to consider include a) how much/little hassle you want, b)how confident you are travelling in London, c) how much/little time you have, d) how much/little you want to spend.....and even e) the weather!
Looking at this map you can go Farnborough to Clapham junction, change and go to East Croydon, another change and on to St Pancras.

Seems an awfully long way round though, underground would be much quicker.
There's a direct bus from Waterloo to St Pancras:

Take a train from Farnborough to Waterloo.

Leave Waterloo station by the main entrance (which is off to your left as you arrive on the station concourse).

Follow the main flow of people heading to the left.

After just a few yards you'll come to a zebra crossing. Cross over it and walk through the archway that passes under the tunnel. (Picture here: http://i60.tinypic.com/160ao7m.jpg ).

That takes you to Bus Stop K, on Tenison Way.

Take a 59 bus (very frequent) to St Pancras International. (30 minute journey).
NB: Remember that you can't use cash on a bus in London. You need to use an Oyster Card or a contactless debit card. (While a through rail ticket from Farnborough to St Pancras International, or stations beyond, covers Underground travel across London, it doesn't include bus travel).
Buenchico's answers are as ever unsurpassable. Am in awe and admiration.
>>>Buenchico's answers are as ever unsurpassable . . .

. . . except possibly by Buenchico? I've just found a better route!

Take a direct train from Farnborough (Main) to Wimbledon. (Usually an hourly service, with a few additional trains, taking about 40 minutes. Find times here: http://www.nationalrail.co.uk )

Then take a Thameslink train direct to St Pancras International. (Usually 2 trains per hour, typically with a 42 minute journey. The National Rail website tries to send you via the Underground so, instead, check times here: http://www.thameslinkrailway.com/download/9582.3/b-all-thameslink-services )
Unfortunately the Thameslink trains actually run under the ground between Blackfriars and St Pancras. Depending why stanwilcock doesn't want to use the underground, then Thameslink might not ge an option.
