Hi there I went to see my GP as I have been having problems with breathlessness I already have atrial fibrillation and I am on betablockers and blood thinners. She was really nice she trained under the chief physician of royal college of surgeons who is a cardiologist at my local hospital. I went to see her about the possibility of obstructive sleep apnoea but she listened to my heart as I was complaining of breathlessness and she has ordered an ECG and blood tests on thursday, a bit quick I thought anyway I asked her what she thought was up and she heard something when she was listening and she suspects a mitral valve problem which she has told me is really common and may just need an adjustment of medication or it may need surgery. Anyone here have a mitral valve problem and what causes it is it a bad lifestyle like mine and being overweight? Trying hard not to freak out

Ķeep calm, Gordie.
Your GP and consultant will keep you right.
Try and relax.
The commonest mitral valve problem some 40 years ago was due to rheumatic fever.

Not so now, as we rarely see rheumatic fever.

Today, the commonest cause is the ageing process.

Two main conditions of the mitral valve is mitral incompetence and mitral stenosis.

With a mild degree of mitral stenosis one can live for decades without treatment, but this will have to be investigated by a cardiologist.
Too early to say on the information

I have the same up atrial fibrillation and anticlogs.
My mitral vale is normal but I get an echo every now and then

and I think after the results are back they may do that.for you...[echo]
