My understanding of Kindles is that only the 'Fire' models have backlights. That seems to be confirmed by this answer (to the same question) here:

^^^is that only the 'Fire' and 'Paperwhite' models . . .
It depends on what you are using your kindle for....if it's to be a tablet,then the Fire. But if it's just for reading,then get a paperwhite. Best screen for adaptable light in any conditions. You can read in the dark if you want.
is all about the voyage now, rather than the paperwhite!
I've heard good reports of the Kandle if you already have a Kindle.
Bear in mind that the Fire can be used for library books; the paperwhite cannot (other than Amazon) but the battery life is MUCH longer on the paperwhite. If you are interested in library books, the KOBO is very similar to the paperwhite in terms of backlight/battery life AND can be used for library books.
