Can't help you fix it but its not your phone you hear ringing when your phone rings, but the line. A BT line with no phone plugged into it will still ring if you phone it. have you got another phone to try in the socket?

Thanks woofgang, I haven't got another phone to test with. I'm with Virgin Media I might just give them a ring from my mobile.

could you borrow one from a neighbour, even buy a cheapo one? Argis have got them as cheap as chips

If you get a technician out and its not the line then the charges are pretty steep and they are only responsible for the line up to the main (master) socket in the house and no further. I keep a cheapo phone like the 4.99 one in my tool kit just for checking the sockets when I have phone issues. A simple plug in corded phone will also work in a power cut which is useful if you need to make a call and can't or don't want to use your mobile.
