I received two letters yesterday from British Gas one for gas and the other for electric saying I owe them over £110 pounds from an outstanding charge from over 18 months ago. I switched suppliers around that time and I'm pretty sure I paid them up in full when I switched although I can't prove this as it was so long ago. The letters state that due to a glitch on their side I wasn't sent any reminders until now and I now owe them this money! £110 is a lot of money to me and I don't know how to pay especially as it looks like it's their mistake. Is there anything I can do?

Demand they show you where this charge is owed and demand they send you all bills from that period.
In the case of British Gas, the more you fight, the better chance you have of the charge being waived in my experience.
I thought they didn't let you switch until the account was clear.
